Reviewed by Raimo Tuomela, University of Helsinki/University of Munich In this book Michael Bratman presents a unified and systematic theory, termed "planning theory", of shared agency. For shared activity, Bratman requires that our intentions lead to the activity by way of mutual responsiveness (1992, 339), so our failure in meshing our plans would presumably prevent us from engaging in the activity, or do so only with difficulty. Abstract Michael Bratman’s work is established as one of the most important philosophical approaches to group agency so far, and Shared Agency, A Planning Theory of Acting Together confirms that impression. In his reply, Bratman defends his own emphasis on stronger forms of shared agency by appeal to the central philosophical interest of questions about the continuity (or discontinuity) between individual agency and social agency.
